   10 predictions for 2000HH

   After reflecting some on the events of 1999, I decided to try my hand
   at prognosticating what might occur in 2000. The Linux community is
   anything but stagnant, so this is no small task. Which leads me to my
   first prediction:

    1. Just about everyone will be surprised.
       If looking back on all that has happened in '99 astounds you, just
       wait until next year.
    2. Linux will go head-to-head against Windows 2000
       W2K is scheduled for release in February of 2000. After all the
       talk and fuss, we'll get to see just how quick companies are to
       jump on the bandwagon. And we'll see from a technical standpoint,
       how Windows 2000 fairs. With the 2.4 kernel arriving sometime next
       year, journaled file systems arriving and other advancements,
       Linux should prove to be a worthy opponent.
    3. Linux 2.4 will be released in March of 2000
       We'll see if I'm right. :)
    4. The Office Suites and Productivity Apps will arrive En Masse
       KDE 2 will be released. It will come with KOffice, which will
       undergo tremendous development in 2000. We'll also get a major
       release from the Gnome Project including Gnome Office.
    5. Mozilla will be packaged in most distributions
       We'll get a release from mozilla.org that will be intended for
       users not just developers and testers. Users will be frustrated
       with quirks and bugs initially, but in 2000 we'll see mozilla turn
       into a top-notch browser in terms of stability, speed, size,
       usability, and features.
    6. Jabber will become the Instant Message standard in the Linux
       Community
       We'll see the transports for protocols such as ICQ, AIM, IRC, etc.
       being perfected, clients popping up all over the place, and users
       of the jabber system on the rise.
    7. Microsoft will announce a version of Office for Linux
       It won't be free and they'll sell quite a few copies.
    8. The section at bookstores devoted to Linux will double in size.
       You'll be overwhelmed with the choices presented to you.
    9. DVD support for Linux will arrive
       The legal battles will end with a victory and we'll have
       full-fledged support for DVD under Linux.
   10. 2000 will be the year of the games
       Linux will be viewed by the gaming community at large as a serious
       gaming platform. Numerous ports and new games will be released for
       the platform.

   There you have it. I welcome any comments regarding my predictions.
   Whether you agree or disagree with what I've said, I'm sure you will
   concede that it will be an exciting year to watch unfold.
